We have decided not to post Christmas cards last year and instead have started our fundraising with an opening donation to the charity.

About the charity

Rutland House School for Parents is a centre that provides Conductive Education for babies and pre-school age children with mobility and/or sensory and communication difficulties, such as cerebral palsy or Down's syndrome and other associated disabilities.

Working with the parent and the child this vital charity creates a learning partnership; giving support and hope for the future to the parent and providing a structure for the child to want to become more independent. They help the child to develop their mobility and communication skills, their confidence and personality with the aim of becoming valued members of their community, to have friends and to socialise.

Just imagine you have been eagerly looking forward to the birth of your new baby, planning its future... then you are told it is doubtful your child will ever walk, talk or be independent. You are devastated - where do you turn? Parents of newly diagnosed children are often left in limbo with little or no information or support. Through Conductive Education programmes, School for Parents uses play, fun games and songs, encouraging the child to want to learn new skills and, crucially, they help the parent through each stage too.

"I was overwhelmed by grief. I couldn't cope with the realisation of the enormity of my daughter's lifelong needs. School for Parents helped me from falling apart; they showed me how to understand her needs and how to love her. Looking back now, it was the one constant factor which held us together in the early days."
